The US is picking its next ambassador to China after Gary Locke decided to resign last year.

Senator Max Baucus, the nominee for the post, told the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee he will make efforts to develop the economic relationship between China and the US. The 35-year Senate veteran says he will encourage China to act responsibly in resolving international disputes, respecting human rights and protecting the environment.

Although the Senate hearing was not always smooth, with Baucus at one point acknowledging he is "no real expert on China," his nomination is widely expected to be approved. The Senate Foreign Relations Committee is likely to vote on his confirmation as early as next Tuesday.

"If confirmed I wish to accomplish two goals. Goals that are critical to our relations with China ... And I see many areas where our relations are not only cooperative, but is vital." Said Senator Max Baucus, Democrat, Montana.
