On Saturday night, one designer managed to get the fashion world's movers and shakers to leave Manhattan, and head to Brooklyn for a 15-minute show.

Alexander Wang presented the Fall 2014 collection of his signature line in a greenhouse at Brooklyn's Navy Yard, a huge space that provided a dramatic and futuristic backdrop to his inventive designs.

The label provided a free boat service to Brooklyn, knowing some guests may feel reluctant to leave Manhattan after running from show to show all day. Wang explained that he felt a duty to keep raising the bar and experimenting.

"It never seemed that extreme an idea to me. Of course you have to cross the bridge, but it’s 10 minutes from where my office is and I think that fashion is always evolving and changing and why not have a location change?" Wang said. "And I think with every kind of change there's always opposition, but I think that's the exciting thing about fashion as well, to keep the conversation new."

The show oozed sophisticated luxury, with big, comfy jackets in luxe fabrics, like cashmere, a particular hit. But there was also a theme of survival. Many of the garments came with multiple pockets, and overall, the clothes were an unusual mix of simple and elaborate.

And running concurrently on Saturday night, designers Max and Lubov Azria presented a Fall 2014 collection that added elements including geometric metal beading, feather trims, and corset belts that resembled cages. Herve Leger keeps coming up with new adornments to the label's famous skin-tight garments.

"So we wanted to bring an awareness that machines and robots and future is already here and is here to stay," said Lubov Azria. "So you can say that our models are almost like the future avatars, but they're not so in the future, they're actually now... So you're wearing technology."

Many of the form-fitting garments were black, but often the tones weren't muted at all. A bandage dress in dark blue, with encrusted beading, resembled a figure skater. It came with black over-the-knee boots, adding to the over-the-top effect.

New York Fashion Week runs until February 13th.
