A wide range of activities are being held on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties between France and China. Saturday saw an evening of eclectic music performances at a music venue in Beijing. Artists from various francophone countries gathered for an octane cranked month-long "Mars en Folie" festival taking place in 14 cities throughout China.

Rapping and slamming both in French and Swiss German, Greis knows how to rouse the crowd no matter what language they speak. For more than ten years, he has been representing the bold and fresh Swiss hip-hop scene. Four bands have been invited on the occasion of the 19th Francophone Festival in China. They come from Switzerland, Canada, Belgium and France.

These artists come from four different francophone countries from all over the world, each bringing their unique voices and styles of music. It’s a testament to how "diversity" can actually be a powerful answer to strengthening solidarity.

"Even though we come from different places, I hope we can be a unifying force for francophone culture, which is not limited to just one region or country," singer Jali said.

"The artists have been chosen not just because of their talents but also because they demonstrate a genuine interest in China," said Jean-Luc Tissier, general delegate of Alliance Francaise.

The 7th year of "Mars en Folie" offers a wide palette of sounds from the pop rhythms of Jali to Greis’ literary rap, the raw energy of Epsylon and the intimate and evocative melodies of Chantal Archambault.

"I just can’t wait to go off and explore the city. I actually wrote a song called ’Chinese Western’ because China for us is still something that is far away and mysterious," Chantal Archambault said.

The festival not only offers an eclectic musical experience for the Francophiles in China but also a chance for theses musical ambassadors from different countries to get acquainted with China. "Mars en Folie" will head down to Chongqing next and wrap up in Hong Kong on March 22.
