France has returned three valuable paintings stolen by the Nazis during World War Two to their rightful owners. France says it’s an acknowledgement of the atrocities that families suffered during the war.

At an official ceremony, France’s culture minister Aurelie Filippetti returned the works to the surviving grandchildren and great-grandchildren of the original owners. The works included "Madonna and Child" by 14th century master Lippo Memmi and the 18th century canvas "Portrait of a Woman."

The third work, "Mountain Landscape" by Flemish artist Joos de Momper, was planned for display in the art gallery Adolf Hitler hoped to build in his hometown of Linz, Austria. The restitution is part of France’s efforts to return hundreds of looted artworks that Jewish owners lost during the war.
