Air and water pollution, and their associated health risks, is one of the major issues confronting China.

The Ministry of Environmental Protection monitors air quality in 74 cities across the country. And according to its figures, in 2013, the air across all cities met the national air safety standard an average of 221 days out of the year. But just three of the cities consistently met that standard throughout the year.

Meanwhile, Ministry of Environmental Protection also says around 280 million Chinese people exposed to unsafe drinking water. The ministry reported that over 70 percent of water from lakes, and 60 percent of underground water across the country does not meet the national safety standard.
