"Sing My Song" is a Chinese reality talent show that premiered on January 3 this year on CCTV-3, the Arts and Entertainment channel. The series is produced by the same team behind the "The Voice of China" and bears resemblance in format. Contestants in "Sing My Song" render their original composition rather than doing song covers by other artists. Britain's ITV Global Studios has just landed international format rights to "Sing My Song" -- making it the first original Chinese talent show format to be brought overseas.

"Sing My Song" is a studio-based music contest, searching for the best original songs in the nation. Four of the Chinese music industry's most accomplished singer-songwriters share their experience and expertise as producers-judges, providing feedback and guidance to the contestants.

The judges on the show share an important goal: They are scouting for songs that will be featured their own original music album.

Sing My Song takes the talent show genre in a new direction, highlighting the musical creativity of the contestants. It has also become a social media phenomena.

In April, 2014, UK's ITV announced that would be a British version of "Sing My Song". It's first ever time that a British TV network has bought the distribution originally from China.

"This cooperation has two parts. Firstly, the ITV will produce and then broadcast 'the British song' same as our Chinese model in the UK within two years time. Secondly, they will represent our model and distribute it worldwide. Because ITV has ample past successful experience in promoting many programs. They have offices around the world, and they have worked well with many other countries. So by working with ITV, we think that 'Sing My Song' will be promoted globally in a very short time," Tian Ming, CEO of Star Media, said.

The show retains basic elements of "The Voice of China" such as blind auditions, two-way selection and battle rounds, but this time a score, lyrics and emotions are the main criteria for the judges.

The best songs will be incorporated in albums released by the judges, who are also entertainers.

However "Sing My Song" is not a singing competition. What matters most is the mass appeal and market potential of the song. The singer's and songwriter's vocal skills and stage presentation are only a small part of the whole package.

"As the first original program made in our country, this program model is completely self-developed. As a studio musical talent show, we aim to find the BEST original songs. Our four songwriter producer and mentor, will eventually pick a song and add their original album, and that's why 'Sing My Song' can garner international copyright market recognition. And because China has a huge television market, our success will be an indicator of our future partners around the world," Tian said.

The original series aired on China's national channel CCTV-3 earlier this year. The entire season captured 480 million viewers with a total audience share of 37 percent in China; CCTV-3's slot ratings had surged 59 percent year-on-year.
