Every holiday season, Nanluoguxiang is packed with crowds coming from near and far, all wishing to get a taste of old Beijing flavor. But why exactly is this alley, which stretches less than 800 meters, so popular among tourists?

Among the answers provided by a dozen tourists, "genuine old-style Beijing," "Hutong culture", "quaint shops", "mouth-watering snacks" and "roof top bars" are mentioned by nearly everyone. These attractions form the essence of the extremely popular alley.

With a history of some 740 years, Nanluoguxiang seems to be one of the most well preserved lanes in Beijing. But in the capital city of China, which boasts thousands of Hutongs, why does this one attract so much attention?

"Time magazine published an article during the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics stating that Nanluoguxiang is one of the top 25 tourist destinations in Asia. That was a big boost for us." said Xu Yan, Head, Chamber of Commerce, Nanluoguxiang.

Xu was among the first to establish his own business in the area. He's been witness to many changes in the area, from its early tranquility to today's crowded flamboyance.

"There were several bars here at the very beginning. Westerners and middle-class Chinese were frequent customers. Plus, the Central Academy of Drama in this area played a pivotal role in boosting the local market. I opened my own business here in 2007. Together with a whole bunch of restaurants and shops which came later, we set the tone and formed the foundation of the local economy." said Xu Yan, Head, Chamber of Commerce, Nanluoguxiang.

In order to put Nanluoguxiang on the map, local authorities have collaborated with design professionals for the overall planning. As a result, the alley has successfully become a little Bohemia in the downtown capital.

And with the advent of Beijing subway lines 6 and 8, each with a stop dedicated to the neighborhood, Nanluoguxiang can only expect more tourists to come.
