Director Zhang Yimou is staking his newest film on the legacy of the Cultural Revolution.
Starring beloved actors Chen Daoming and Gong Li, the family story is about loyalty in love. The film was greeted with great emotion at the Cannes screening, left audiences crying and smiling at the same time with its powerful emotional punch.
Actress Gong Li has been described as the muse of the Fifth Generation of filmmakers. She said the film dealt with love under difficult times, a universal theme that connects with all audiences, and that she was pleased with the emotional response.
Meanwhile in the competition bracket, director Michel Hazanavicius introduced his new film "The Search". It's a powerful indictment of the 1999 Chechen war, a very different approach from his earlier Academy Award winning fairy tale "The Artist". However, it received mixed reviews from critics.
Italian female director Alice Rohrwacher also presented her first film in competition, "The Wonders", a story about a teenage girl trying to free herself from her family. She is one of the only two female competitors in the main competition.
