Stars of the classic Chinese opera 'Farewell My Concubine' walked the red carpet in Hollywood on Friday. They were there for a special screening of a 3D film that captures the very essence of the Chinese opera experience.

3D film of classic 'Farewell My Concubine' opens in US

"Farewell My Concubine: The Peking Opera" vividly captures a stage production of the Chinese opera classic. It's designed to give a realistic taste of traditional Chinese culture using the latest 3D technology.

The opera stars say filming the show was a unique experience.

"When we normally perform on stage we face a thousand people. But performing on camera is different, there's a much bigger audience. When we are performing on stage we kind of think in a macro view. On camera it's micro. We have to focus on every scene, every action, every gesture, to directly target our audience," performer Shang Changrong said.

Co-star Shi Yihong agrees the whole experience was new and exciting.

"As a Peking Opera performer, being a part of a film is very interesting for me, especially in this amazing 3D project," Shi Yihong said.

The film is being shown in the US as part of celebrations to mark the 35th anniversary of diplomatic ties between China and the US.

It's hoped that the combination of a 200-year-old Peking Opera and modern 3D technology can help American people better understand Chinese Culture.
