Swedish author Barbro Lindgren has received the 2014 Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award, or ALMA, at a royal ceremony in Stockholm. The awarding committee has heaped praise on Lindgren, saying this "literary pioneer" writes children's books with adventurous language and rich psychological nuance.
Born in 1937, Barbro Lindgren is known as the author of "innovative and multifaceted" works for children of all ages. Her work mainly includes picture books, poetry, plays and books for young adults.
According to the ALMA jury, Lindgren's stories are often humorous and possess a warm tone that speaks directly to the child, whether it be amusing escapades or more serious reflections
Since Lindgren made her debut in 1965, she has published over 100 titles, and her work has been translated into more than 30 languages.
In her speech at the award ceremony, Barbro Lindgren paid tribute to the author Astrid Lindgren and shared some memories with the audience, particularly about a manuscript she sent.
The Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award is an international prize for children's and young people's literature. It was founded by the Swedish government in 2002 and is administered by the Swedish Arts Council.
