The first images of the Air Algerie crash site in Mali have emerged. The footage, released Friday, shows a stark terrain littered with bits of debris that appear to have been pulverized on impact.

The video was aired on the French national public TV station, France Two. It was filmed by soldiers from Burkina Faso, where flight AH5017 took off from early Thursday morning.

The plane then disappeared from radar screens, before it was found again, crashed in northern Mali's Gossi region. French officials immediately dispatched a military unit to secure the crash site. And one of the aircraft's two black boxes has been found in the wreckage.

President Hollande said the recovered flight recorder has been taken to the northern Mali city of Gao for further processing.
