Director Luc Besson is not one to shy away from explosive car chases, mind-bending space operas, whimsical tales and animated adventures. But the Frenchman says he wants to see movie genres "cross over" more, and not stick to such clearly defined formats. His new science fiction action thriller is called "Lucy" and Besson says the film has given him a chance to "mix things up a little".

Lucy is an American student in Taiwan, who becomes a drug mule for a Korean gang. When one of the packages breaks inside her, it turns out to be more than simple narcotics, the experimental substance enhances her brain-power to unprecedented levels. She discovers she's in a race against time before the drug turns her into something beyond comprehension.

Speaking in Taiwan during a promotional tour, Luc Besson explained his fascination with the human brain.

"There is no way I want to give one to somebody else. This one I knew that it was for me, because I think I can bring something because of who I am." said Luc Besson, Director, "Lucy".

Scarlett Johansson

Besson wrote the script more than a decade ago. But he says it was all about waiting for the right time to put it all together.

"I wanted to have a real base of scientific basis. Things in the film are fake and wrong, but most of them are real and I wanted to be sure to control that very well before I started to make a fun film in it. Because I don't want to do a documentary about the brain, I want also to do a film and the thing is I'm a little older now and as a movie-goer I need some content. I'm not 12 anymore. At 12 I can eat whatever, I don't care, but now I want to see some action, some fun, some feelings, some content, some philosophical content and I don't even know if it was possible to mix all these in one." said Luc Besson, Director, "Lucy".

Starring in the film is Scarlett Johansson. Besson says he didn't have her in mind when writing the character but that it's important for any actor to stretch themselves.

"It's always a bad idea to write for someone because when you write for someone, you're going to write what she's able to do. When you write for someone, you don't know who, then the actress reads the part and they say 'god, how am I going to play that, because it's not me' and then the work starts." said Luc Besson, Director, "Lucy".

"Lucy" also stars Morgan Freeman. Parts of the movie were filmed in Taiwan, where it opens on Wednesday.

"Lucy" is in cinemas now in some countries and regions, and gets it's global release at different times throughout August.
