A UN watchdog has issued a fresh call to Japan to take full blame for forcing women from China, South Korea and Asian countries to work as sex slaves during World War II.
The UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination said that by failing to treat the ageing survivors properly, Japan has let their suffering drag on for decades. It's asking the Japanese government to conclude investigations into the violations of the rights of comfort women by the military.
It also want those responsible brought to justice and a comprehensive and lasting resolution to these issues. It also urged Japan to provide apologies and adequate compensation to surviving comfort women and their families.
The panel also reviewed Japan's respect for an international anti-racism accord. It said Japan lacked legislation banning race-based hate speech.
