The event was conceived more than 65 years ago in a London theatre. Competitors paid for the privilege to enter the Championships in an attempt to obtain the ultimate beard bragging rights and a trophy.
"Well, I think it's that chance to show off just a little bit. As British people are not really supposed to show off, it's one of those times when it's OK to show off just a little bit and in some cases quite a bit," said competitor Chris Gordon.
There were different categories for the fuzzy faced competitors. Categories of moustache included: Natural, English, Handlebar and Freestyle. Partial Beard categories were Natural Goatee, Musketeer, Freestyle and Sideburns. The new category for this year's championship is the 'Business class Beard', described as the 'city gent' look.

"Everyone I meet is really eccentric; interesting. Lots of different people from different walks of life, it's fantastic," said competitor Taylor W.
The competition is not for the shy or reserved. Entrants needed have some flair and engage with the audience on stage.
Many were dressed in flamboyant outfits to match their fabulous facial hair.
