Organizers of one of Taipei's biggest music festivals brought the event to the mainland for the first time during the past National Day holiday. The three-day Simple Life Festival has now wrapped up at Shanghai Expo Park in Pudong. More than 600,000 people attended the event, which included 57 performers playing on four stages, as well as seminars and creative products.

Originality is the key feature of the Simple Life Festival, as made clear by this year's lineup of artists and bands, most of whom write their own material. (They include Pu Shu and Xu Wei from the Chinese mainland, as well as Taiwanese singers Wei Ruxuan, Jonathan Lee and the band Sodagreen.) The show included pop, rock, and folk performers. One visitor who came from Taipei just for the festival says she was impressed with the different atmosphere in Shanghai.

The audience here is far bigger than in Taipei, and I really like the venue - an old factory building with a strong sense of industrial design. For the artists, I'm also glad to see some independent artists from Taiwan.

But organizers say music is just one part of the festival, as they're trying to expand the focus. Another important part of the event is lectures and conversations between well-known writers and architects. Several hundred people sat on the ground, and interacted with them.

Besides, visitors could also wander through the stalls filled with creative products from Taiwan. Most products are handmade and environmentally friendly, promoting a creative and healthy lifestyle.

I just don't want to be in a hurry. The inner peace and thinking that people get from reading is very important. We say simple life, but in the other way life is not simple.

"Nowadays the lineup in music festivals is more or less similar, I think that depends on how tolerant we are to accept new ideas, how the industry respects different creations. The situation is the same with culture and creative industry, and our goal is to provide such a platform," said Zhang Peiren, founder of Simple Life Festival.

The Simple Life Festival began in Taipei in 2006, and is now an annual event. Organizers say they want to include designers from Shanghai in future festivals.
