There is less traffic on the roads and more security on the streets, as the capital gears up to host the APEC meetings, which will begin Wednesday. With more than 4,000 journalists reporting on the event, the APEC media center located in Beijing's northern suburban district near Yanqi Lake has opened for business.
The Media Center covers an area of some 9,000 square meters and has full wireless network coverage. The center provides related television and broadcast services, as well as free meals and shuttle bus service for journalists. More than 400 staff and 100 university volunteers will be on hand to provide assistance.
Beijing will continue to keep a strict rein on emissions in coordination with neighboring provinces through frequent inspections and tough penalties for violators. The city has released a series of policies, including keeping half of private vehicles off the road every day and suspending work at all construction sites in the capital.
And because of trucks and delivery carts being banned from driving inside the city center, customers have been notified to expect delays of three up to five days.
