Young artists, whether they are pursuing a career in drama, music or the visual arts, need the proper guidance and encouragement to take their dreams to the next level. And that platform was provided at the 5th annual New Star Art Festival, which drew to a close with an award ceremony in Beijing. The award ceremony announced winners from categories such as Newcomers, Experimental and the Public Prize.

Chinese contemporary art has been rising in its prominence on the world stage with artists exhibiting their works in New York, Paris, Berlin and more places.

In order to support and encourage China's next generation of talent, the New Star Art Festival hosts an annual competition for up and coming artists to exhibit their works, where they will be judged by an international panel.

The award ceremony was held on Thursday night in Beijing where the winners were announced. We talked to a jury member before the event who told us his opinion about this year's pieces.

"All the work were very true and its direction of thoughts and ideas. Some of the work needs more exploration in terms of subject choice and method but all the work were accomplished. And then some of the artists don't look like they are young they just have strength so when you see the work, oh that's an interesting piece. You don't think it's developing or it's in process, it's finished and they have a strength of an idea," says Geraild Pryor, jury of New Star Art Festival.

This year, 100 artists were selected for the final competition. Winner Zhang Han told us what this competition means to her and her fellow artists.

"I'm so honored to receive this award. Festivals like this mean a lot for young artists like me. It is very hard to break into the contemporary market so to be able to be given a platform like this is very rare," says Zhang Han, a winner of New Star Art Festival.

The New Star Art Festival is the only art festival in China that's dedicated to nurturing aspiring young artists.

Organizers hope to promote the diversity of cultures in contemporary cities and melting art into public life.

The New Star Art Festival represents freedom, independence, innovation, and spirit for exploration. The festival also strives to build a platform for young Chinese contemporary artists to help them promote and market their works.
