One film that has everyone talking during this awards season is the The Martin Luther King Jr. biopic 'Selma' which landed four Golden Globe nods on Thursday.
Analysts believe the film will probably resonate amid the current debate about race in America, in light of recent protests involving the killing of unarmed African Americans by police. The film also received nominations for best drama and best actor for David Oyelowo as King.
"Selma" tells the story of the tumultuous three-month period in 1965, when Martin Luther King, Jr. led a campaign to secure equal voting rights in the face of violent opposition. The epic march from Selma to Montgomery culminated in President Johnson signing the Voting Rights Act of 1965. It became one of the most significant victories for the civil rights movement.
The film's director Ava DuVernay was the only female contender in that race for the Golden Globe awards.
"My highest hope for this morning was recognition for David. David has been in so many films. David is in every film that you watch, basically. He's in every film. But he's always just off to the side doing amazing work in the film, and so for him to be in the center of this film, and for him to hold it down so beautifully, and to be recognized for that, really if I think about it too much, I'll start to cry with happiness. I really will. I'm overjoyed for him," DuVernay said.
David Oyelowo who plays Martin Luther King, Jr. , said it was important for him that the civil rights leader was authentically captured, especially for his family.
"They loved the film, they felt we had done it justice. Dr. King's children were there. MLK Jr. the third, Bernice King. To have them say that they feel like we got it right, to have his children say to me that they feel like I did their father justice, I mean, there's nothing that can further accentuate that," Oyelowo said.
Selma premiered at the American Film Institute Festival on November 11. It will hit US theatres on Christmas day.
