An annual ice sculpture exhibition in northern Germany is celebrating the world of Rock and Roll.

Seventeen artists from across Eastern Europe have carved out pop and rock idols and images from the 50s and 60s. And they're all on show at the 12th edition of the "Ice World" exhibition, in the city of Roevershagen.

Hail hail rock 'n' roll, Elvis isn't dead, he's just been frozen in time. This is Graceland, home of "The King". It's been made from 260 tons of snow and 190 tons of ice.

"Everything you see here has never been anywhere else, but has been drawn, designed and created exclusively for this exhibition," Othmar Schiffer-Belz, Art Director of Ice World, said. "What is special as well is that for the entire duration of the festival, artists will continue to create new sculptures here."

"I am a sculptor, I came to make some art, some sculptures, and of course the main challenge is the ice, the material," Lithuanian sculptor Andrius Petkus said. "It has a transparency and you must play and to fight with this material."

It's not only about the rock n roll legends. There's pop art, and iconic objects, like this ice slide in a huge pinball machine.

Adults, meanwhile, can grab a drink at an ice bar featuring a sculpture of Marylin Monroe.

"There were seventeen artists, and we mustn't forget there are 450 tons of ice and snow here," Schiffer-Belz said. "Therefore we've needed a lot of assistants to lift and connect these blocks of ice. We have a good team who've worked here for many years. One block of ice weighs 130 kilograms. It is a huge undertaking."

With the exhibition kept at minus 10 Celsius, visitors will be "shivering and shakin" as they tour the frozen creations and could even be as "cold as Ice" themselves.

It opens its doors Saturday and runs until November next year.
