Berlin Fashion Week kicked off on Monday with a show by Charlotte Ronson. The New York-based British designer has made a name for herself over the past decade with her pretty, easy-to-wear pieces.
Attracting fewer big names than the corresponding event in New York and Paris, the biannual fashion week in Berlin has become known for showcasing upcoming designers who might go on to become extremely successful.
The opening slot was nevertheless given to a well established designer: Ronson launched her first collection in 2000 and her clothes have been seen on a variety of actresses, models and socialites in recent years.
The whimsical style was typical of the collection as a whole, which was built around pastel blues, pinks and neutrals with dainty florals and playful dots.

"The collection was inspired by a daydream and, you know, the palette and feel, and I was lucky enough to work with this artist, Kim McCarty, who does these amazing watercolours of different... of people, of girls and also of objects. And so we worked together and went through all of her pieces and picked the daisy, so for the daisy print, and we also put the daisy on the girls' toes and that was the inspiration because her work is all about painting with water and then make it. It's kind of that uncertainty to focus which was the feel of the daydream, so it all kind of came together in its own way," Ronson says.
Translucent fabrics and flat sandals in bright shades of green and blue cut through the sweetness of the designs somewhat, but the collection maintained a very wearable aesthetic, clearly aimed at a mainstream market.
Berlin's winter Fashion Week is set to run until Friday, with highlights including shows from Lena Hoschek and Marc Cain, where guests Katie Holmes and Liz Hurley are expected.
Around 200,000 visitors are expected to be in Berlin for the event, bringing a welcome boost to the local economy in the quiet post-Christmas period.
