Beijing's scenic spot Shi'cha'hai, or Houhai, has been the destination where foreigner go for a taste of the old way of life. And it's also Beijing's number one spot for ice-related activities. The joint bid for the 2022 Winter Olympics by Beijing and Zhangjiakou have rekindled an enthusiasm for winter games among Beijing citizens.

Shichahai lake transforms into huge skating rink

The picturesque Shichahai lake is dotted with large patches of lotus flowers during the summer, but when the temperature drops, the lake transforms into a large skating rink.

For visitors, especially foreigners, it's a must-see destination, with nearby hutongs lined with various bars to serve guests.

For winter sports fans, it's an ideal place to hang out this season. Li Feng, who's over seventy years old, is still spending his free time ice skating. He might not be as agile as he used to be, but he still has just as much fun.

"Skating is a habbit for the locals, like eating ice-sugar gourds, or drinking big bowl tea. Beijing's winter used to be very cold, so we could come to the lake to skate for two months, but now, we can only skate for one month," Li said.

For seasoned skaters, it's a great feeling to pass others gracefully with ease. For beginners, it's also fun to have a nice try, even if they fall on the ice. Riding on these specially made vehicles have also been a popular pastime for locals, especially for kids.

For adults, they're here to accompany their kids or revisit their childhood memories.

Beijing used to be a major city in the country's plan in developing winter sports. Even now, the skating rinks, ski resorts, and other facilities are still leading the country in its market share. The joint bid with Zhangjiakou for the 2022 winter Olympic games is shining a spotlight on winter sports and is pushing locals to revisit some icy fun.

"The bid for the winter Olympic games needs the support of its locals. In fact, public participation in winter sports is really vital. We also aim to take advantage of the opportunity to promote winter sports," said Wang Cheng, the deputy director from Sports Bureau of Xicheng District, Beijing.

Cu Qiu, a game played in a semicircle on the ice, with winners kicking the most balls to the opposite end of the field, and dragon boat on ice are two newly added attractions in Shichahai, both hoping to attract more visitors. The enthusiasm and happiness that comes with these activities are now being experienced on the ice in the coldest time in Beijing.
