It's the most exciting time of the year in the British film calendar. This year's BAFTA nominations come from a broad range of countries. But they have one thing in common. They are the year's best and they are up for the academy's most prestigious honors.
Eddie Redmayne has scooped the Best Actor prize for his portrayal of Stephen Hawking in "The Theory of Everything". The film was also named Outstanding British Film and Adapted Screenplay. He dedicated the award to his family, the cast and crew, and the Hawking's family. "He has been incredibly kind to me. We spend a few of hours a week before filming. Subsequently we do Q&A together. He has been very generous to me." Said Eddie Redmayne, actor.
Boyhood won Best Film and Best Director for the absent Richard Linklater and best supporting actress for Patricia Arquette. The film portraying in real time a boy growing up from age 6 to 18 has struck a chord with almost everyone who has seen it.
Accepting the Bafta, Arquette said Linklater had made a film like no other. "our movie has been acknowledged mean a lot to me. It's such a personal movie for all of us. It's a movie about human beings. I have never been in a movie where people called me and said I called my mum and apologize."
Wes Anderson's comedy The Grand Budapest Hotel won the most awards on the night, a total of five including Costume Design, Production Design, Make-up and Original Music; with Anderson winning his first Bafta for Original Screenplay.
If there was one surprise tonight, it's that the World War Two drama, The Imitation Game, with Benedict Cumberbatch as the codebreaker Alan Turing, won nothing despite nine nominations. "It's wonderful privilege to be here. It's marked with some extraordinary actors. You know, It's order enough. I'm not often the competition expert. But at the same time, I'm very thrilled to be touched to be where to be in the night," he said.
There weren't any Chinese movies nominated at this year's BAFTAs, but the academy expects a variety of Chinese films to come to the UK.
"I think in the past people expect a lot about the martial arts movies. But I read a lot about the comedy films that coming through and being really successful. That's very exciting for us. I'm very keen to be able to see more Chinese films," Said Amanda Sonia Berry, chief executive of BAFTA.
The BAFTAs are often regarded as an indicator of where Oscars gold is going. This year's awards in London have certainly set up an an exciting battle in Hollywood in two weeks' time.
