In the US city of Baltimore, the mayor has announced citywide curfew starting 10 pm to 5 am beginning Tuesday. The city is now under a state of emergency.

The curfew was announced after violent protests erupted after the funeral of a 25-year-old man who died after being injured in police custody. The mayor says people will be held accountable for destroying the city.

"It's idiotic to think that by destroying your city that you gonna make life better for anybody. And as we start to review the tape that we have from our own police video as well as what we are able to see from the different outlets, we will be holding people accountable," he said.

Maryland governor Larry Hogan has activated the National Guard to address the escalating violence. So far, fifteen policemen have been injured.

Hundreds of rioters in northwest Baltimore looted stores and went into confrontation with police force Monday afternoon. A massive building fire broke out in the most violent US demonstrations since looting in Ferguson.

The violence started around school dismissal time, following the funeral of Freddie Gray. The black man died on April 19th, after being severely injured a week earlier during police arrest.

Baltimore's Police Commissioner, Anthony Batts, has acknowledged that Gray was not treated properly after being arrested. An internal police investigation is underway.
