China's Air Force has flown across the Miyako Strait for the first time, as part of exercises in the west Pacific Ocean. The strait runs through the Japanese islands of Miyako and Okinawa.

A military spokesman said the one-day exercise was successful, and that similar drills may be planned in the future.
"It's a common practice for countries along a coastline to conduct far-sea training, which also fits with China's national defense needs and army building. In line with international laws and practices, offshore drills by the PLA Air Force beyond the First Island Chain will proceed in consideration of actual situations," said Shen Jinke, Spokesman of People's Liberation Army Air Force.
The spokesman also made it clear the routine drill was not targeted at any specific country or region. Thursday's exercise is the PLA's second in two months. The first, also over the Western Pacific, came in late March.
The western Pacific Ocean is often used for navy and air drills by Asia-Pacific countries. Chinese military experts have said the international community should "understand, respect, and get used to" future Chinese drills in the region.
