After claiming the gold medal in the men's 200-meter freestyle and silver in the 400-meter freestyle, China's long-distance expert Sun Yang set his sights on the men's 800-meter freestyle at the FINA World Championships in Kazan, Russia.

Sun started in lane seven and trailed from the beginning. The USA's Mack Horton took the lead after the first 200 meters, followed by Italian Gregorio Paltrinieri. But at the 400-meter mark, Sun found his rhythm, and was behind Horton by half-a-body's length. After 500 meters, Paltrinieri moved into the lead, with Sun just behind him. But the big man from China sped up to pass the Italian at the 750-meter turn.

The 23-year old-Sun then turned on the jets to sprint through the final 50 meters to finish first in seven minutes, 39.96 seconds. It is Sun's third consecutive world title in the men's 800-meter freestyle. Paltrinieri manages a new European record with a silver-winning time of 7 minutes, 40.81 seconds, while Horton finishes third.

Adam Peaty of Great Britain earned his second gold medal of the championships with a victory in the 50m breaststroke, a non-Olympic event. He set the world record with 26.42 seconds in the semi-finals on Tuesday and came back to win the final in 26.51 seconds. Cameron van der Burgh finished second and Kevin Cordes was third.

Laszlo Cseh of Hungary overtook Chad Le Clos to win the 200m butterfly, as the oldest man in the final at age 29. Cseh trailed Le Clos after the first two lengths before passing the South African midway through the third. He hung on and touched first in one minute, 53.48 seconds. Le Clos settled for silver, while Jan Switkowski of Poland earned bronze.

In the 4×100-meter mixed relay, Great Britain's Chris Walker-Hebborn, Adam Peaty, Siobhan O'Connor and Fran Halsall won with a time of 3 minutes 41.71 seconds, to set a world record in the new event. The United States was second and Germany third. China finished fourth to establish a new Asian record.
