Malaysian audiences embrace hit Chinese films during China Film Week

Malaysian audiences are embracing five hit Chinese films now being screened during China Film Week. The event seeks to foster collaboration on movie projects between the two countries and deepen cultural ties.

Five recent Chinese hits will be screened over the five days, including the opening film, "Monkey King: Hero is Back," and "Monster Hunter."

"Wolf Totem," by French director Jean-Jacques Annaud, and two comedies ‘Go Away! Mr. Tumor' and ‘Lost in Thailand' complete the line-up.

The event seeks to foster collaboration on movie projects between the two countries and deepen cultural ties.

Liang Ge, of China's State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television, hopes this movie week will pave the way for further cooperation in the movie business between the two countries and strengthen their close ties.

"Chinese movies have a long history with Malaysia. As early as the 1920s to 1930s, movie companies set up by Chinese people were developing well in what is now Malaysia. That episode is important in the history of Chinese movies," Liang said.

"The five films we've brought to Malaysia are a reflection of China's movie market. We hope Malaysian people get to know more about Chinese film and its culture."

A quarter of Malaysia's population is Chinese, and the shared cultural background means the local population is very receptive. The event runs until March 25.
