International journalists have visited the ancient city of Palmyra after Syrian troops regained control of the historic site, with the support of Russian airstrikes. A spokesman for the Russian Defense Ministry said that they are helping preserve history.
"It is the historical legacy of humanity on planet Earth, where, by the way - you live too. Therefore, in the first place, it's important that we managed to save something," said Igor Konashenkov, spokesman for the Russian Ministry of Defense.
Some of the city's most prominent monuments and archaeological sites were destroyed or damaged. Russian de-mining experts were seen using metal detectors and sniffer dogs to search for mines buried by the militants. Several dozen residents had chosen to return. However, some of the houses were completely damaged. Nearby, Russian tanks patrolled the streets. Still, many residents feel unsafe as ISIL had been spotted a few kilometers away.
