China's Shen-nong-jia has been put on the UNESCO World Heritage List as a natural heritage site, bringing the number of listed Chinese sites to 50.

The 40th session of the World Heritage Committee on Sunday decided to put China's Hubei Shennongjia on the pretigious World Heritage List as a natural site, bringing to 50 the number of listed Chinese sites. Located in central China's Hubei Province it boasts a high diversity of flora and fauna.

Geological expert Li Xiao-chi says Shen-nong-jia is an outstanding model for its unique geological, environmental and biological diversity.

"Shennongjia has a unique geological environment and its biological diversity, abundant ecosystems, and biological evolution have made it an outstanding example among global mountain ecosystems of the same latitude."

China's Zuojiang Huashan Rock Art Cutural Landscape considered to be one of the most impressive pre-Historic painted rock art panels of the world, was also placed on the list as a cultural site, at the World Heritage Committee recently held in Istanbul.

A total of 21 new sites have been added to the World Heritage List at the session.

The list now has 1,052 sites in 165 countries.
