6.8 magnitude quake strikes Fiji Islands

An earthquake measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale hit the Fiji Islands at 6:56 p.m. Hong Kong time (1056 GMT) on Monday, according to a bulletin released by the Hong Kong Observatory.

The epicenter was initially determined at 17.2 degrees south latitude and 178.4 degrees east longitude, about 99 km north of Suva.
