The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) has called on the United States to pull its troops out of South Korea as early as possible, the official newspaper Rodong Sinmun said on Monday.

The report said the so-called US-led "UN Command" was unjust, and it would only increase the "threat to peace and security" on the Korean Peninsula and the "danger of war".

There was "no legal ground for the US forces to stay in South Korea," it said, adding that the 30th UN General Assembly had already made a resolution which "called for dissolving the 'UN Command' and withdrawing all foreign troops from South Korea."

Walter Sharp, commander of the US forces in South Korea, was recently reported to have underscored the need to keep the "UN Command" in the future.

He said the UN Command was an effective mechanism to eliminate the factor of conflict from the Asia-Pacific region and it would protect the Korean Peninsula from "hostile actions".
