Two suspected insurgents were killed during a gunfight with Thai security officials in Thailand' s southern border province of Yala Sunday morning.

At around 6 a.m. local time, police and soldiers surrounded a house of a southern insurgent near a rubber plantation in Yala's Thanto district. A gunfight started after the insurgent opened fire at the officials. The gunman was killed after the clash, the Bangkok Post's website reported.

At the same time, a team of police and army officers enclosed a house of another separatist militant in Yala's Juang district. The insurgent was killed after opening fire at authorities.

Insurgent violence in Thailand's three southernmost provinces - - Yala, Narathiwat and Pattani -- have killed over 3,500 people in the region since its resurrection in January 2004.
