The U.S. Embassy warned of possible terror attack at Indonesia's Bali island on New Year's Eve, an official told Xinhua on Thursday.

"We sent emails to the U.S. citizens visiting Bali, warning them of possible terrorist attack on the New Year's Eve," said Corina Sanders, the acting information officer at the U.S. Embassy in Jakarta.

She said that it is the embassy's job to take care of safety of the U.S. citizens and to alert them if there is any possible terrorist attack that could harm them.

She said that her embassy coordinates with the Bali Tourism Board in providing information that is considered important for the U.S. citizens.

According to Sanders, the warning was based on information from Bali's Governor Made Mangku Pastika

In 2002 and 2005, more than 220 people were killed by bomb attacks in Bali, the assaults that targeted Westerners.
