Iran's Parliament (Majlis) Speaker Ali Larijani urged the Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Committee to seriously consider a bill on severing relations with Britain, the semi-official Mehr news agency reported on Thursday.
"The country's important institutions should seriously consider this issue, and the Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Committee has a duty to study the bill and make a decision about the level of relations with Britain," Larijani was quoted as saying.
On Wednesday, the Iranian Majlis submitted a bill to the National Security and Foreign Policy Committee of Majlis calling for severing diplomatic ties with Britain, local satellite Press TV reported.
Larijani blamed the British government for backing the unrest which gripped Tehran and other Iranian cities after the June 12 presidential election, amid claims that the vote had been rigged in favor of incumbent President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Britain rejected the accusation.
Iranian authorities, especially the lawmakers, have constantly accused Britain of interfering in Iran's internal affairs and supporting Iran's opposition groups, a charge also rejected by London.
