At least 22 people were killed and 30 injured on their way to a wedding mid-night Tuesday when the bus they were traveling on fell into a river in Jalaun district of Uttar Pradesh, northern India, said police on Wednesday.
The bus skidded off the road and fell into the Pahuj river in Jalaun about 250 km from the state capital Lucknow, said police.
The passengers were from the neighboring Madhya Pradesh who were going to Jalaun to attend a wedding.
The driver of the bus had escaped and is on the run, said police.
Road incident rate in India is among the highest in the world, with at least 100,000 killed each year on the road, according to official estimates.
