As many as 24 people including children were killed and dozens of others injured in a stampede at a mosque in Mali's heritage town of Timbuktu, local police and medics reported on Friday.
The incident occurred on Thursday night during the Mouloud festival at the religious site in the northwest of the Muslim country in West Africa.
Officials in the capital Bamako said rescuers rushed to the scene immediate after the incident at Timbuktu's Djinguereber mosque, the main shrine in the region.
The Mouloud festival attracted a large crowd of people to observe the birthday of the Prophet Mohammed at the mosque, when the stampede took place.
