BRIC nations pledge closer agricultural cooperation

BRIC nations have said they would promote cooperation and lift existing barriers when coping with the challenge of world food security, according to a declaration released here on Friday.
The agricultural ministers from Brazil, Russia, India and China, got together on Friday to discuss food security, reducing negative impact of climate change, and promoting information exchange and coordination.
The declaration, issued after the meeting, said the ministers have defined the four major areas of BRIC's agricultural cooperation.
The areas include establishing the information exchange system, sharing experience on agriculture and food stock, reducing impact of climate change on agriculture, and developing agricultural technology and innovation, it said.
In addition, the ministers called on the international society, especially the developed countries, to support developing countries with capital and advanced environment-friendly technologies, so as to help them realize the sustainable development of agriculture, said the declaration.
It added the next BRIC agriculture ministerial meeting is scheduled in 2011.
The agricultural ministerial meeting is a result of the 2009 BRIC summit that was held in the Russian city of Yekaterinburg.
On the sidelines of the meeting, Chinese Agriculture Minister Han Changfu met with his Brazilian, Russian and Indian counterparts and exchanged views with them on agricultural cooperation.
