Baykal told a news conference here he was facing an illegal and unethical conspiracy, referring to a video tape allegedly featuring Baykal and a female CHP deputy put on the Internet last week, the semi-official Anatolia news agency reported.

Members of the CHP have claimed the scandal was a conspiracy against their party, which is in the midst of a row with the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) over a constitutional amendment bill.

Turkish President Abdullah Gul has condemned the incident, saying it was extremely obnoxious, according to the agency.

The Chief Prosecutor's Office in Ankara has launched a criminal investigation over the case, it said.
