46 killed in landslide in Myanmar Rakhine state

A total of 46 people have been killed and four others injured in a landslide triggered by heavy rain in Maungtaw township of Myanmar's western Rakhine state over the past four days since the weekend, the official daily New Light of Myanmar reported Thursday.
The heavy rain and strong wind, that also swept the state's four other townships of Minbya, Ponnagyun, Kyauktaw and Buthitaung, blew off roofs of many houses and fell some buildings, causing damage to bridges and erosion of some sections of roads in the three prior townships, the report said.
Rescue work and evacuation of flood victims are underway, the report added.
Last month, strong wind struck Myanmar's two divisions of Mandalay and Sagaing, killing two women and destroying 112 houses, two each schools and monasteries in Sintku and Khanti townships respectively.
The strong wind also struck Sagaing division's Monywa township, collapsing some trees with roots uplifted and pressing on some houses. Some telephone cables were also disconnected.
The day temperature in Monywa reached as high as 45.8 degree Celsius then.
In late April, strong wind had swept Magway division's Aunglan, Myaing, Minhla and Hsinhaung townships, Bago division's Nyaunglebin and Mon state's Kyaikto as well as Nay Pyi Taw region, Chin state, Kachin state and Shan state causing loss and damage to the areas to certain extent.
