Four British soldiers were killed in a road accident in Afghanistan Wednesday, the Ministry of Defence confirmed Thursday.

The soldiers, part of a police advisory team, were killed Wednesday evening near Gereshk, Helmand province. They were travelling to help in an incident at a nearby checkpoint when they died, the ministry said.

Three soldiers were from 1st Battalion The Mercian Regiment and the other was from 1st Battalion The Yorkshire Regiment.

The number of British soldiers killed in Afghanistan since 2001 stands at 307. Britain has 9,000 troops in Afghanistan, with U.S. and British troops conducting joint operations against the Taliban in Helmand Province.
