Rodong Sinmun, a leading newspaper of Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), Wednesday said the joint military exercise to be held by South Korea and the United States "thoroughly violates the statement of the United Nations Security Council."

South Korea shows its persistent anti-DPRK policy by holding joint military exercises with the United States on the East Sea from July 25 to 28, with the aim to strengthening psychological warfare to bring pressure on the DPRK, the paper said in a commentary.

South Korea is still indulged in confrontation, ignoring the current opportunity for conversation. If the South Korean authorities were to continue its confrontation policy, the DPRK would never sit and wait but to take tough countermeasures, the paper added.

The U.N. Security Council on July 9 issued a statement over "Cheonan" warship case, unanimously deploring the attack on the South Korean warship that killed 46 sailors in March. The Council, however, stopped short of blaming the DPRK. Pyongyang has denied any involvement in the incident.

On July 10, a spokesman of the DPRK Foreign Ministry slammed South Korea and the United States for their "stupid plot." He warned of the danger of the current armistice on the peninsula and the urgency of building a peace regime.

The DPRK would constantly make efforts to reach a peace agreement and denuclearize the peninsula through the six-party talks, he added.
