Indian Communist Party urges amicable solution to Kashmir conflict

India's Communist Party Marxist (CPI-M) Monday urged the central government to start dialogue process to find an amicable solution to the conflict in India- controlled Kashmir.
"The question of Kashmir concerns Kashmiris, concerns India and concerns Pakistan. We urge the Center to initiate political dialogue in Jammu and Kashmir. Avoiding the issue will not resolve the problem. What is required is initiating a sustained political dialogue with all sections in the state to eventually reach a political settlement," CPI-M party chief Prakash Karat told the media in the Kashmiri state capital Srinagar.
He added, "It should be an open dialogue. The way forward is by recognizing the special status of the state and the need to assure the people of their identity. These require a new political framework in which the bedrock is maximum autonomy."
The CPI-M general secretary also said that the Indian government should stop treating the Kashmir problem there as a law and order issue which can be resolved through administrative measures.
"There has to be an immediate end to these brutal and inhuman police firings. There has to be a strict 'no firing policy' to face stone throwing crowds," he said.
Over 60 civilians were killed by Indian paramilitary troops over the past two months in India-controlled Kashmir during protests against the Indian rule by the local Muslim population.
