Unknown attackers raided a boat off Cameroon, killing five people on board including three local guards, a French oil firm operating in the region reported on Wednesday.
The deadly attack came on Tuesday night when the vessel was sailing towards the Moudi offshore oil field adjacent to Nigeria, according to a statement from the French company Perenco SA.
Oil facilities in the Gulf of Guinea region have been frequently targeted by militants in recent years. Another foreign oil company Exxon Mobil Corp reported this week that eight employees went missing following an attack on its Ibeno facility in Nigeria's oil-rich Akwa Ibom State.
Nigeria's main militant group, the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND), on Tuesday claimed responsibility for the attack and the abduction of seven local employees.
