A Delta cargo facility near Boston's Logan airport was evacuated on Tuesday after suspicious cargo was found by sniffer dogs. Authorities gave all-clear later after the area was declared safe, as the bags were determined to contain bedding material.
The facility was about a mile away from any passenger areas at the airport. Local WHDH 7 TV said earlier a suspicious package containing two duffle bags was discovered there. The package had a Nigerian address on it.
Authorities said that around 12:30 p.m., a Transportation Security Administration K-9 unit dog picked up a scent on a pallet at the cargo area during a routine security sweep.
Police and FBI agents immediately cordoned off the area and set up a secure perimeter. The building was evacuated as a precautionary measure.
Investigators were called in to examine the two duffel bags that had Nigerian addresses, according to Massport spokesman Phil Orlandella. The bags were sent through X-rays and the threat level was determined to be low after they were found to contain bedding. The incident did not affect flights.
The United States is beefing up air cargo security after two failed mail package bomb attempts claimed by al-Qaida in Arabian Peninsula were disrupted.
