Syria denies closing land border crossings with Jordan

A Syrian official at the Interior Ministry denied on Monday reports alleging that his country closed land border crossings with Jordan.
Mohammad Faour, a media official in the ministry told Xinhua that allegations issued by media on closing borders between Syria and Jordan at the southern border town of Daraa were not true.
"The transit traffic to and from the country is normal," said Faour.
Earlier in the day, media reports cited a senior Jordanian diplomat as saying that Syria closed the two main crossings at Daraa and Nassib on the Syrian side, following the deployment of Syrian army tanks in the southern border city of Daraa to crack down anti-government protesters there.
Syria is witnessing unprecedented pro-democracy and change protests that erupted five weeks ago in Daraa, 100 km south to the capital Damascus. The protests had spread to other parts of the country, causing the death of some 340 so far, according to human rights group reports.
