Landslides bury Malaysian orphanage, killing 16

Malaysian police on Sunday confirmed that 16 were killed in landslides occured near an orphanage on Saturday afternoon in Hulu Langat, a district in the southeast part of Selangor, Malaysia.

Police officer Azman Ayob told reporters on Sunday that all 16 victims, aged between eight and 34, were found by about 5 a. m. Sunday, most of which were children.

Nine survivors were found and rushed to hospital for medical treatment.

Days of heavy rain is expected to be the main reason for the incident.

District police chief Abdul Rashid Wahab told reporters that the victims were among the 49 students and wardens attending a motivational course in the orphanage. They were said to be having lunch at the tent where two landslides struck simultaneously that made the victims unable to escape in time.

Part of the orphanage were destroyed in sludge.

Those living around the disaster area were urged to evacuate over landslide threats.

Police and rescuing team started a second round of search on Sunday morning to make sure no one left inside.
