At least one miner was killed and 8 others injured as an elevator collapsed early Friday in a mine in eastern Ukraine, the Emergency Situations Ministry reported.

According to the Ministry press service, 600 workers working underground are evacuating the Bazhanova mine in Donetsk region through emergency exits.

The accident came after a powerful explosion hit the mine in Ukraine's eastern Luhansk region at about 2 a.m. local time (0000 GMT) Friday, killing at least 16 miners and leaving 9 missing.

Ukraine's mines are considered one of world's most dangerous due to outdated equipment and lax safety regulations.
