Taliban militants fighting Afghan government set free four Turkish engineers in Ghazni province 125 km south of capital city Kabul on Sunday after months of keeping them in captivity, provincial police chief Zarawar Zahid said.

"The Taliban insurgents who abducted four Turkish engineers in Paktia province some eight months ago released them this morning and handed them over to elders in Deh Khudaidad village in the outskirts of Ghazni provincial capital the Ghazni city," Zahid told Xinhua.

He also said that the four engineers had worked for a road construction company in Paktia province when Taliban militants kidnapped them.

No ransom has been paid for their release, he asserted, adding the elders mediation had secured their freedom. All the four are in good health, Zahid added.

Meantime, Zabihullah Mujahid who claims to speak for the Taliban outfit in talks with media via telephone from undisclosed location confirmed the report and said Taliban fighters set free all the four engineers on Saturday.
