China has always taken a responsible and prudent attitude toward arms trade and did not export military materials to Libya, said a Foreign Ministry spokeswoman on Monday.

The Gaddafi regime did contact individuals from certain Chinese companies in July without the knowledge of the government, but the companies didn't sign any arms contracts or export military materials to Libya, spokeswoman Jiang Yu said at a press briefing.

The Chinese government strictly implemented the United Nations Security Council Resolutions 1970 and 1973 and Chinese companies didn't provide military materials to Libya directly or indirectly after the passage of Resolution 1970, she noted.

China, abiding by international obligations and domestic laws and regulations, conducts arms trade under strict controls, Jiang said.

She stressed that any exports of military materials would need to be approved by authorized government departments.
