Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu speaks during a regular press conference in Beijing, September 7, 2011. |
"It's a matter of principle. China stoutly opposes U.S. arms sales to Taiwan," Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu said during a regular press briefing.
Jiang urged the U.S. to abide by the three Sino-U.S. joint communiques in which the United States committed to limiting its sales of arms to Taiwan.
Jiang also urged the U.S. to be "fully aware" of the sensitivity of the issue and to stop arms sales to Taiwan in order to avoid damaging both Sino-U.S. ties and the development of cross-Strait relations.
