At least 33 people died and 100 were hospitalized Wednesday after consuming illicit liquor in the eastern Indian state of West Bengal, reported local media.
Four people have been arrested for supplying the illicit liquor, also called moonshine, in Sangrampur village in the South 24- Parganas district.
The incident occurred when the villagers drank the liquor Tuesday night near a railway station and they started vomiting, had loose motions and complained of serious stomach pain.
Angry residents demolished the illegal liquor shops.
The Communist Party of India-Marxist has demanded a statement from Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
The owner of the shop is said to be absconding.
Selling of illicit liquor is common in villages in India and many people fall ill and some even die consuming the drinks made of industrial chemicals.
